HANNAH’S WORDS STAYED with Dylan the rest of the morning while the painting crew finished spray painting the ceiling and interior walls. They finished shortly before noon. Knowing the cabinet-installation guys weren’t due to come until later in the week, Dylan decided it might be a good time to make it up to Hannah. He’d been a little short with her before she left for work that morning, when he knew she was only trying to help. So he headed over to the garage, intending to take her to lunch.

“Not here,” Slim said.

Too late, Dylan realized he should have called first instead of simply taking for granted she’d be around to see him whenever he could fit her into his schedule. “Where’d she go—do you know?”

Slim continued working. “Some ritzy steakhouse next to the RDU airport.”

That sounded extravagant for someone who was allegedly counting her pennies so she could finish her renovation sooner rather than later. “For lunch?”

Slim removed a rubber hose from the engine. He frowned at the split running halfway up one side. “Some guy called and asked her to meet him there. So she got all gussied up and off she went.”

Dylan frowned. “You mean she changed clothes.”

“Yeah. She keeps extra clothes and makeup and stuff in her office locker.” Slim opened a plastic package and took out a new hose. “What’s it to you, anyway?”

Dylan shrugged, pretty sure Hannah was not ready to go public with her affair with him. Although when it came down to it, he wasn’t sure he would mind. If only because it might make her see what they had shared did not have to be a one-night stand.

“I was just hoping to ask her to grab something to eat with me. Guess I’m too late.” Dylan shrugged again and fished for a little more information. “I didn’t realize she, uh, socialized during the noon hour. I figured she’d just grab a sandwich somewhere in town, somewhere quick, or eat here at the garage.”

“That’d be the norm,” Slim agreed, taking pity on Dylan’s genuinely lovestruck expression. “At least until of late.”

Dylan watched Slim install the new hose. “What’s happened lately?”

“She’s gone off like this several times. Always after some guy calls. I asked her if it was someone special and she just laughed it off and turned all red, and said, ‘Nah, I’m never getting married.’”

An alarm went off inside Dylan’s head. “No idea who my—ah—competition might be?” Dylan asked, deciding to lay all his cards on the table in hopes of getting more complete information.

Slim shook his head. “Not a clue. All I know is that she was just beaming when she took off out of here.” Slim paused, shook his head, his fondness for Hannah showing. “I hadn’t seen her that excited in a long time.”
